Before you Begin!

What will I gain from this program

By joining the ALX Software Engineering Program, you will boost your skills and launch your career in one of the most exciting and in-demand fields in the world of tech.

What will I be learning?

Theoretical and practical software development + work-ready skills, that can connect you to meaningful paid opportunities.

What if I have no Software Engineering knowledge?

While it's not essential to have prior knowledge, we recommend being curious and courageous to gaining foundational skills, being ready to learn and ask questions, and having a willingness to read, research and solve problems.

To help you get started, we'll share some beginner-friendly resources with you.

Learning Environment

Where will I be learning?
We currently have two different streams for the ALX SE program. Some cohorts will be fully online while others will be hybrid.

If you are enrolled in the hybrid program, it is expected that you attend the hub you have been assigned to.

For learners enrolled in the fully online program, access to our agile learning environment called the Intranet is provided. This serves as our virtual classroom, providing all the necessary tools and resources for learners to engage in their coursework.

From the INTRANET, you'll submit your projects and get scored, allowing you to track your progress throughout the programme. Which means no lecturers, You Own Your Learning (YOYO), You Own Your Learning (YOYO)

We release projects daily/weekly, so never be too far away from the Intranet.

How do I access the INTRANET?

Great news! Your login details and instructions will be sent to you in just a few days before the start of your program. Make sure to reset your password and get ready for full access on the first day of onboarding

Where do I submit projects/assignments?

On the Intranet

Is my learning limited to the intranet?

No, you're not limited to learning from the resources on the Intranet. We highly encourage you to research and leverage other learning resources as well - in fact, it's all part of being a lifelong learner!

How long does this program last for?

For those going through the fully online program, 12 months; 9 months of Foundation knowledge and 3 months of Specializing in either Back/front end technologies.

For those going through the hybrid program, 15 months; 3 months for ALX foundations, 9 months of SE foundations knowledge, and 3 months of Specializing in either Back/front end technologies.

Your First Few Weeks!

What happens on Day 1?

You'll receive a series of instructions(emails) throughout the week prior to your onboarding to prepare you for your official first day at ALX.

On your first day, it's mandatory to attend the Onboarding activities and all activities scheduled for the entire week.

What happens on Day 2?

Learning starts on Day 2, You will have a list of simple projects to complete from Day 2 and for the next 12 days - The first 2 weeks are referred to as Onboarding Phase. Not to worry, the onboarding phase WILL NOT be scored.

This time is dedicated to getting familiar with the program & Intranet as we prepare you for this journey.

After Onboarding, What Next?

Probation phase! This is where the real learning begins! You'll have projects to complete, and yes, they will be Graded. You are required to achieve a minimum set score to advance to the next phase of the program.

This phase runs for 30-days and if you advance you will go on to begin Section 1 of Foundation.

NB: Some of the projects you do in the onboarding phase will be repeated in the probation phase but this time around they will be scored so ensure that you do them even if you did them earlier during onboarding

What if I have an Admin related question?

If you have any admin related question, reach out to our support team bit.ly/alx-se-support. They are available to assist you all through the 12 months.

Projects & Scores

What am I expected to do to Advance further?

Achieve a minimum of 80% overall score for Month 1 (Probation Phase) and a minimum of 70% every other month.

Why is there a score requirement? I was under the impression I could learn at my own pace

Agreed, We understand that everyone learns at their own pace - However, we also believe that having a score requirement motivates and challenges our learners to strive for excellence and push themselves to reach their full potential.

Is it tough to achieve 80%?

Not at all! Just focus on learning, applying the knowledge you've gained and submitting within the deadline, and 80% will be a piece of cake.

Will there be deadlines?

Oh yes! You will have 3 deadlines per project. Scores reduce the later you submit, but no worries, we have learners who target the 2nd and 3rd deadlines and still do great!

What If I fail?

This isn't a contest. If you don't meet the scores for the first month, you'll have a chance to redo it and try again. The same applies to subsequent months - but there's limit to this. You can pause and resume your learning for a limited number of times.

Supporting You!

Will I be left alone? I'm new to this!

No way! This is a Peer learning program, so we encourage you to maximize support from your peers + we have Learning Ambassadors (LA) that would be assigned to support you.

Where do I meet my Peers and Technical Mentors

On Slack. Think of it like a WhatsApp group that has everyone on there.

Sounds Chaotic?

Nope! We have cohorts grouped into channels - think of it like multi-groups. Although, we do have one place where we all gather for updates!

How do I join the ALX Slack space?

In a few days to your onboarding, we'll send you a link to get started. You will need your Intranet sign-up to access Slack.

Winning Mindset

Is this program Hard - You guys said Do Hard Things?

Doing Hard Things doesn't mean we make learning difficult. Think of it like learning a new language - every new challenge or goal seems tough at first, but you've got this, and you have us to support you!

What if I feel discouraged?

You might have some low moments, but when that happens, ask yourself, "Am I better than I was yesterday?" No matter what the answer is, reflect, tie your laces, and move forward. You were made for this!

What if I am tempted to take the easy way out?

We take Plagiarism very seriously here. We want to equip you with the skills you need to succeed in the workplace, and copying code won't get you there.

Plus, we have systems to detect plagiarism, and if caught, you'll be dismissed from the program. Let's learn and grow the right way!
